  • product photography

This summer I ventured into product photography, beyond photographing my own products.  I had the pleasure of working with the lovely ladies Sandra and Jennifer of JenSan Candles.  Sandra was looking to update their shop with some fresh images and I was happy to help.

I photographed their new line of Essential Oil Soy candles as well as some yummy-smelling pillar candles.  To make the images pop, I shot them against a clean white background.

Are you a seller on Etsy looking to freshen up your shop with new images?  I’d love to work with you.  Email me for details.

  • 2011 calendar is here!

2011 desk calendars are now available in my shop!  This year I’ve included a handmade wooden base, perfect for displaying the unbound pages.
Each page is printed on cardstock, not photo paper, to ensure they won’t curl throughout the year.  And once the month is over, you can trim the bottom away for a perfect little square print to display however you like.
    Find them here.
  • take only pictures…

Take only pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time.
    ~Motto of the Baltimore Grotto

With the exception of 2 1/2 years in Rhode Island, I spent my childhood living all along the Gulf coast.  You see, my dad worked on the oil rigs.  I was born in southwest Louisiana (practically Texas).  We moved to Rhode Island, Florida, back to Rhode Island, back to southwest Louisiana, then Texas.  When I was 13 we moved to a tiny town in southeast Louisiana named Cut Off.  Bayou Lafourche runs through the small string of towns that make up Lafourche parish.

I remember my first night when we moved there.  I couldn’t sleep.  I could hear the tug boats blowing their fog horns signalling to the pontoon bridge operator to open the bridge over the bayou so the boat could pass.  It was bizarre.  This was not like any place I had lived before.  Everyone had crazy Cajun accents and names I couldn’t pronounce.  They ate weird food and everyone was related to everyone else.  I was a complete outsider.
After living there for 5 years (longest ever in one place for me at the time!) I decided it was the most backwards place I’d ever lived, but it I was proud to call it home.  These were the most kind and welcoming people I’d ever met.  To this day when people ask me where I’m from, I tell them I’m from a little bayou town south of New Orleans…
So you probably see where I’m going with this.  My heart aches for the people down there.  Their livelihoods depend on the Gulf.  This oil spill is devastating.  It’s horrible to see what’s happening with the wildlife, but the ramifications reach much farther.
I wasn’t sure what I could do to help, little old me with my camera out here in Colorado.  But some wonderful people have put together a shop on Etsy where all proceeds will be donated to charities to help in the recovery.  Independent Etsy sellers from all over, including myself, have donated a variety of  items for the collective shop.  If you would like to donate to a great cause and get a little something for yourself in the process, please be sure to check out HelpTheGulfCoast on Etsy.  My print can be found here, but there are a lot of great items to choose from with several more being posted as fast as they can post them.

  • recent and random

I’ve been really backed up on processing photos.  I have this OCD need to do them in the order they were taken.  I made a bit of progress over the last week.  Here are some of my most recent random images:

    lovesickness
    silly love songs
    a pink day

  • inspired by sharon montrose

This video has been around for a while, but I wanted to share for those of you who haven’t seen it.  I love animals, I love photography – this is my dream job.  Unfortunately I have a hard time taking a picture of my own dog who loves and adores me, so I’ll leave it to Sharon Montrose.

I love hearing how she came to be where she is today:  “from a series of complete and total failures.”  We can all relate.  She tried other more traditional photography routes but finally found what she truly enjoyed when she began photographing dogs.  Now she’s shooting high profile ad campaigns for companies like Friskies and Target as well as her own personal animal series.

When I saw this baby giraffe print on 20×200 today, I just had to get it.  Giraffes are the theme in my little girl’s room, and this will be the perfect addition.  Isn’t it cute?  Sharon Montrose also has a shop on Etsy featuring more of the same giraffe, pigs, lambs, a basset hound, you name it.  I’m totally inspired by her work.

  • in bloom

The tulips have started poking their heads out around here – one of my favorite times of year.  After such a long winter, the flowering trees are a welcome sight with their fluffy white and pale pink blooms, but the bright colors of the tulips are what really make me happy.
  • photo blocks

I’m happy to offer these new photo blocks in my etsy shop. Each block measures 5″ square, 1 3/4″ deep. The photo is adhered to a block of poplar that has been sanded to a smooth finish, stained a dark walnut color or a natural finish, and sealed.  I’m working on offering smaller sizes as well – please contact me if you are interested in a different size.

  • they tell me it’s spring…

…but I wouldn’t know it by looking around here.  Today we built an enormous snowman, the biggest I’ve ever built.  And by we I mean my husband.  I added the mouth, but that’s about where my contribution ended.  I was more busy keeping my toddlers on their feet.

Anyway, back to my original point.  It’s spring!  To celebrate I’d like to share with you by offering a

free 5×5 or 5×7 with any print purchase

from my Etsy shop.  And on top of that I just added a set of new prints that I really love.  They have my favorite orangey yellows and orangey reds.  Hope you like them too!

  • a history lesson

Did you have any idea how long these conversation hearts had been around?  I was looking for some more info and found this on the Necco site:

…the concept behind today’s Conversation Hearts got its start when Abraham Lincoln was still President. Mottoes seemed to have come into prominence with cockles, a small crisp candy made of sugar and flour formed in the shape of a cockle or scallop shell. The early cockles contained mottoes, which were printed on thin colored paper and rolled up inside.

In the 1860’s, when Daniel Chase, the brother of New England Confectionery Company’s founder, Oliver Chase, began printing sayings on the candy. He experimented first with hand tools, and then devised a machine in which the cloth was replaced with a felt roller pad, moistened with vegetable coloring, usually red, which pressed against the die. The die printed the words on the lozenge paste and the double purpose machine cut the lozenges.

Grown-ups were entertained and passed the hearts around at parties. For weddings, there were wedding-day lozenges with humorously foreboding prophecies such as: “Married in satin, Love will not be lasting” “Married in Pink, He will take to drink” and “Married in white, You have chosen right.”

The present day Sweethearts® Conversation Heart dates back to 1902. Back then, besides hearts, they also produced various shapes such as postcards, baseballs, horseshoes and watches.

I got to do some valentine-themed shots recently.  I just loved how the lollipop was backlit by the sun as it was going down.  I added this image to my Etsy shop, and I’m hoping to do a few more in the next couple of weeks.

As much as I love flowers, I really do love winter too. There is something so peaceful and calm about a fresh snowfall. I took this shot at the farm where we got our Christmas tree this year.
